Why Spring and Fall Are Best
Sod roots fastest when soil temperatures are between 55°F and 75°F. In Ocean County:
- April–May: Soil temps hit 55-65°F, rain is frequent, and the sod has the entire growing season ahead to establish
- September–October: Soil is still warm from summer (65-75°F), but air is cooler so the sod doesn't stress. Less watering needed.
Can You Install Sod in Summer? (Yes, But...)
We install sod all summer long — June, July, and August. It works great IF you water properly:

- Week 1: Water 3x per day (early morning, midday, late afternoon) — 15 minutes each
- Week 2: Water 2x per day — 20 minutes each
- Week 3-4: Water 1x per day — 30 minutes
- After rooting: Deep water 2-3x per week
The #1 reason summer sod fails is underwatering in the first 10 days. The sod is sitting on hot soil with no roots — it can dry out and die in a single afternoon if you miss a watering.
Pro tip: If you're installing in July or August and don't have a sprinkler system, we strongly recommend adding one. Manual watering 3x/day for 2 weeks is brutal — most people give up by day 4.
Ocean County Specific Timing
Ocean County has a few advantages over the rest of NJ:
- Coastal influence keeps temperatures slightly more moderate
- Sandy soil drains well (less risk of waterlogged sod)
- But sandy soil also dries out faster — more frequent watering needed
