How to Water New Sod (The Schedule That Actually Works)
Start watering within 30 minutes of installation. New sod has no roots — it's sitting on top of soil with zero ability to pull moisture from the ground. If it dries out, it dies. It's that simple.
Here's the exact schedule we give every customer:
Week-by-Week Watering Schedule
Week 1: Keep It Soaking Wet
- How often: 3 times per day
- How long: 15-20 minutes per zone
- When: 6 AM, 12 PM, 4 PM
- Goal: The sod should feel squishy when you step on it. Lift a corner — the soil underneath should be dark and moist, not dry and light brown.
Week 2: Still Wet, Slightly Less
- How often: 2 times per day
- How long: 20-25 minutes per zone
- When: 6 AM and 4 PM
- Goal: Sod is starting to tack down. You shouldn't be able to easily lift corners anymore.
Week 3: Transition Week
- How often: 1 time per day
- How long: 25-30 minutes per zone
- When: Early morning (6 AM)
- Goal: Roots are establishing. Do the "tug test" — grab the grass and pull gently. If it resists, roots are growing.
Week 4: Deep and Less Frequent
- How often: Every other day
- How long: 30-40 minutes per zone
- When: Early morning
- Goal: Training roots to grow deeper by letting the top inch dry slightly between waterings.
Weeks 5-6: Normal Lawn Schedule
- How often: 2-3 times per week
- How long: 30-45 minutes per zone
- When: Early morning
- Goal: Your sod is now an established lawn. Deep, infrequent watering encourages deep roots.
Signs You're Underwatering
- Sod edges curling up or pulling apart (gaps between pieces)
- Grass blades turning blue-gray (before turning brown)
- Footprints stay visible after walking on it
- Soil underneath is dry and light-colored
Fix: Water immediately for 30+ minutes. If sod has turned brown, it may still recover — soak it heavily for 3-4 days straight.
Signs You're Overwatering
- Squishy, muddy ground that never dries
- Mushrooms growing in the lawn
- Yellow or pale green color (not dark green)
- Sod pieces sliding when you step on them
- Foul smell from the soil
Fix: Skip a watering cycle. Let the top inch dry out before watering again. Overwatering causes root rot and fungus — both can kill new sod.
Summer Watering in New Jersey (June–August)
NJ summers are brutal for new sod. When temps hit 85°F+:
- Add a midday watering — even if you're in week 3-4
- Water early — before 7 AM to reduce evaporation
- Never water at night — wet grass overnight = fungus
- Watch for dry spots — corners, edges, and south-facing areas dry fastest
Do I Need a Sprinkler System?
You don't need one, but it makes life dramatically easier. Here's the reality:
- With irrigation: Set your timer and forget it. Consistent, even coverage.
- Without irrigation: You're moving a hose and sprinkler 3x/day for 2 weeks. Most people miss waterings by day 3-4.

The #1 Mistake: Stopping Too Early
The most common watering mistake isn't underwatering in week 1 — it's stopping too soon. People see green grass after 2 weeks and think they're done. But the roots aren't fully established until week 4-6.
Keep watering on schedule for the full 6 weeks, even if the lawn looks perfect. The root system you build in weeks 3-6 is what keeps your lawn alive through the first summer.
