How to Water New Sod (The Schedule That Actually Works)
Start watering the day it goes down. New sod has no roots in your ground yet. It sits on top of the soil and lives off whatever water lands on it. If it dries out, the edges brown and pull apart.
But more water is not better. The rule is simple: keep it moist, not muddy. If the ground squelches when you step on it, you are overdoing it.
Here is the schedule we give every customer.
The Watering Schedule
The Rules Every Season
- Start the day it goes down. Soak it so the soil underneath is wet, not just the grass.
- Goal: Moist, not muddy. Lift a corner. The soil underneath should be dark and damp, not dry and light brown, and not standing in water.
- Water in the morning first (by about 6am), and the other cycles during the day. Not at night.
- Skip a cycle after a good soaking rain (about half an inch or more).
- Sandy soil gets the top of the time range. Soil that holds water gets the bottom of the range.
Spring (third week of March to May)
- Days 1 to 10: 2 times a day (about 6am and early afternoon), 15 to 20 minutes (sandy: 20)
- Day 11 to the first cut: 1 time a day, 20 minutes
- After the first cut: 3 times a week, 20 to 30 minutes, less after rain
Summer (June to August)
- Days 1 to 10: 3 times a day (about 6am, late morning, mid-afternoon), 15 to 20 minutes
- Over 90°F: add a 4th short cycle (10 minutes) in the afternoon
- Day 11 to the first cut: 2 times a day, 20 minutes
- After the first cut: 3 times a week, 45 minutes. In a drought or steady 90°F+ heat, 4 to 5 days a week
Fall (September to November 15)
- Days 1 to 10: 2 times a day (about 5 to 6am and about 1pm), 15 to 20 minutes (sandy: 20)
- Day 11 to the first cut: 1 time a day, 20 minutes
- After the first cut: 3 times a week, 20 minutes. Keep watering until the sprinklers are blown out.
Roots start to grip in 10 to 14 days. Stay off the new sod until we come back for the first cut. No walking, play or dogs. We come back about 21 to 30 days after install for the first cut and the second fertilizer. We text you the day before.

Signs You're Underwatering
- Sod edges curling up or pulling apart (gaps between pieces)
- Grass blades turning blue-gray (before turning brown)
- Footprints stay visible after walking on it
- Soil underneath is dry and light-colored
Fix: Water right away and check the dry spots by hand. Corners, edges, and the strip along the driveway dry out first.
Signs You're Overwatering
- Muddy ground that squelches underfoot and never dries
- Mushrooms growing in the lawn
- Yellow or pale green color (not dark green)
- Sod pieces sliding when you step on them
- Foul smell from the soil
Fix: Skip a watering cycle and let it firm up. Too much water causes root rot and fungus, and both can kill new sod.
Summer Watering in New Jersey (June to August)
NJ summers are hard on new sod. When it gets hot:
- Stick to the schedule. The afternoon cycles are there for the hottest part of the day. Do not skip them.
- Water early in the morning to cut evaporation
- Never water at night. Wet grass overnight invites fungus.
- Watch the dry spots. Corners, edges, and south-facing areas dry fastest.
Do I Need a Sprinkler System?
On a small area, a hose can work. On a real lawn, you need one. We will not install more than about 1,500 square feet of sod without in-ground irrigation, because a hose cannot water that much evenly, twice a day, for ten days straight. We explain why in sprinkler system vs. hand watering new sod.
- With irrigation: set the timer to the schedule for your season and every zone gets the same water.
- Without irrigation: you are standing in the yard twice a day, including 1 PM on a workday. Most people miss a few. A few is all it takes.

The #1 Mistake: Stopping Too Early
People see green grass after a week and think they are done. They are not. The roots are still taking hold for the whole first month. Keep to the schedule, cut back only when we tell you, and the lawn will be ready for its first summer.
